As the Canadian documentary "End of Suburbia" had us rethink our future of fossil fuels and what is yet to come, their next documentary "Escape from Surburbia" had us rethinking our entire lifestyle and with following the economic and environmental future of this planet, we knew we had to do something even though many found what we were about to do was offbeat and radical and a bit crazy, but to us this was the only solution we could think of to help our children of any near future problems we as a society may have to live.
Our solution we decided on... to sell our house, purchase a trailer andtravel staying in provincial parks while home schooling our children using laptops for school communication and satallite connections so they still communicate with friends and family while continuing to run our business, all from the semi wilderness and the small hometown feel where we are.
Our end goal is to purchase an uncleared piece of land , which in Canada is plentiful ,maybe a few acres and build our house, equipped with a complete change in powering the house to learn to grow our own food if.
You’d be amazed away from the standard suburbia, the cost of this kind of land is worth the investment. Our first adventure will be to park over the winter, as some of our winter parks keep the comfort stations open. We do have to get accustomed to live in a smaller quarter of living space, along with 3 kids but the importance of this is I want my children to learn to live with limitations, to appreciate the world in which we live, to understand wildlife and environment, to use their time volunteering their services and not hanging out a the corner store.
We have decided, although we have to give up some of our luxuries of this life, that not only will this benefit us as a family, it is the only way of survival in the future if/when the time comes.
I never thought I would actually do this; I mean honestly, I grew up either a city girl or a suburbanite and only enjoyed the wilderness feeling like everyone else, in the mad rush of long weekend traffic or a week here and there in the summer. The one thing that sold us on this, we will not be staying in the same park once spring comes, then it’s time to move on and see Canada for the beauty she really is, and to enjoy our freedoms while we still have them.
We are eager to teach our children their education ,with most times the fun of the experience they won’t even realize they are learning, instead of having them read about it and us getting upset if their marks aren’t the best because they just don’t grasp what they don’t experience.
The most important part, teaching them survival skills so when the day comes they will be accustomed to living with less instead of more, but still feel rich in who they are and who they become and how they will survive our greed of the overuse of one supply that keeps us alive.
We not only want to educate our children, but to show those who are interested in this change of lifestyle, all the pros and cons, and you just may rethink your future of what is to come.
